# The Future of TPMs in an AI-First World

## The Question Everyone's Asking

"Will AI replace TPMs?" I get this question at least once a month — from colleagues, from friends outside tech, and honestly, from myself during particularly impressive demo days. After 5+ years at Google watching AI evolve from research papers to production features, here's my honest answer: no. But the job is changing in ways that will make some TPMs more valuable and others obsolete.

## What's Being Automated

Let's be honest about what AI is already doing better than humans:

- **Status tracking** — AI can aggregate updates from 10 different tools faster than any human
- **Report generation** — first drafts of status reports, post-mortems, and reviews
- **Risk identification** — pattern matching across large datasets to flag potential issues
- **Meeting administration** — scheduling, note-taking, action item tracking

If these tasks represent 80% of your job, you should be worried. Not because you'll be fired, but because you're not doing the work that actually matters.

## What's Becoming More Valuable

As the "keeping track of things" part of TPM work gets automated, the following skills become exponentially more valuable:

### 1. Strategic Program Design

Deciding what to build, in what order, and why — this requires understanding business strategy, technical constraints, and user needs simultaneously. AI can provide inputs to this decision, but it can't make it.

### 2. Organizational Navigation

Every program exists within an organization with its own politics, priorities, and culture. Knowing who to talk to, when to push and when to wait, and how to build coalitions — this is pure human skill.

### 3. Ambiguity Resolution

The hardest problems in program management aren't the ones with clear answers — they're the ones where the question itself is unclear. "Should we invest in platform reliability or new features?" has no objectively correct answer. It requires judgment.

### 4. Trust Building

People don't follow programs, they follow people they trust. Building that trust — through consistency, empathy, and competence — is the most AI-proof skill in existence.

## My Prediction

In 5 years, the best TPMs will manage programs 3x the size of what's possible today, because AI will handle the mechanical complexity. The TPMs who thrive will be the ones who used the extra bandwidth to go deeper on strategy, relationships, and judgment — not the ones who just used AI to do the same job faster.

> The future belongs to TPMs who use AI as a force multiplier for human judgment, not as a substitute for it. The bar is rising, and that's a good thing.
